Welcoming Northampton Community Transport Merger

Voluntary Impact Northamptonshire (VIN) who run the Northampton Volunteer Car Scheme, is delighted to announce that it is taking over the Northampton Door to Door Service.

Both the Volunteer Car Scheme and Door to Door Service (NDDS) have existed to provide helpful, supportive community transport to elderly and disabled people living in the Borough of Northampton for over 25 years. Between them they have over 1500 members and undertake nearly 40,000 journeys per year. The merger will offer a more complete package of supportive transport for Northampton, reaching more people in the community to really benefit from what they have to offer.

“It was important to us to support NDDS as their remit fits perfectly with that of our Volunteer Car Scheme. Both are vital community projects that help to improve the quality of life of elderly and disabled people in Northampton. At a time when our communities are most at need, it will not only help to ensure the longevity of the projects and their services; but it will also enable us to continue fighting social isolation and improving wellbeing in our community.

“At VIN we aim to improve the quality of life for all of Northamptonshire’s communities by supporting voluntary and community action; and both the Northampton Volunteer Car Scheme and Northampton Door to Door do just this. We are proud to be able to continue providing these services in our community,” said Chris Pallot, chair, Voluntary Impact Northamptonshire.

Voluntary Impact are passionate about the need for affordable, supportive transport provisions for those in the community, who do not drive and struggle using conventional buses. Not only is this type of transport essential for many to get to important medically related appointments, but it is also a lifeline for shopping, social interaction and wellbeing to help prevent social isolation and keep our community active, independent and involved.

Both schemes, who rely on grants and donations, hope to now be better placed to secure their future. The flexibility of having both volunteer cars and minibuses will also allow Voluntary Impact to improve the effectiveness of the two services, as well as look at new opportunities for expansion and improvement in the future. It is essential that the services are led by the needs of their passengers and those within the community and that they are able to meet those.
