Plans to develop Sixfields Stadium on the agenda

Posted: 20/11/13 by West Northamptonshire Council

Plans to develop Sixfields Stadium are to be considered by Northampton Borough Council’s planning committee next week.

The application, submitted by Northampton Town Football Club, would see the east stand remodelled and extended to provide additional seating that increases capacity from 7,653 to 10,000. Other alterations include a new conference suite with banqueting hall, gymnasium, office space and food kiosks. There are also provisions for additional parking, improved access for people with disabilities, landscaping and a new access road off Edgar Mobbs Way.

The expansion is the first stage of a multi-million pound redevelopment of the area which would support growth in the Enterprise Zone and bring forward more revenue streams for the football club. Additional planning applications for housing, local retail facilities and a hotel are expected to be submitted soon.

Key issues relating to sporting facilities, transport and the visual environment have been taken forward by the applicant and overall the proposed expansion is seen as a positive start for the wider regeneration of the Sixfields area.

Councillor David Mackintosh, leader of Northampton Borough Council said: “This planning application represents an important step in the expansion of Sixfields Stadium. Our sports clubs are an important part of life in our town and a significant benefit to the local economy. We as an administration have always recognised how important they are and we remain absolutely committed to supporting them.”

The planning application is available on Northampton Borough Council’s website www.northampton.gov.uk/planning. The planning committee will decide whether or not to approve the application when it meets on 26 November. The meeting starts at 6pm and anyone wanting to register to speak can call the council’s democratic services department on (01604) 837587, no later than 12noon on the day of the meeting.
