Firms in Northamptonshire are being urged to sign up to find out how they could win business in China, during UK Trade & Investment’s (UKTI) Export Week.
The special event on Thursday 14 November at The Hilton Hotel on Junction 21 of the M1, in Leicester. will give up to 60 local firms the chance to get practical advice on the key business opportunities that exist in what is the world’s fastest growing economy.
Locally-based China expert for UKTI, Jasmine Chambers, said: “UK exports to China have doubled since 2009 and it has risen to become the East Midlands’ third largest export market, after Germany and the USA.
“Northants firms are ideally placed to meet the demands of this market, as Chinese customers see the UK as a mark of quality.”
Firms attending the event can put their questions to a panel of experts (to be announced) and attend workshops about getting paid, finding distributors and reaching Chinese consumers via ecommerce.
Jasmine said: “There is remarkable growth in China’s retail market. There is a rapidly emerging middle class with increased spending power, this creates a strong market for British products and services, as we enjoy a good reputation in those countries.
“In China the urban population is expected to increase by 300 million in 2025, nearly equivalent to the entire population of America, and they have seen a rapid growth in wealthy consumers and the middle-class.
“China’s huge and growing population offers great potential for UK firms but you need to understand the rules, once you do then there is no limit to the opportunities for success.”
The news comes as UKTI East Midlands announce a 2014 market visit to China. The five day trip to Shanghai, Nanjing and Ningbo from 7 to 11 April will be open to any company in the East Midlands who wants to develop business in China.
China: in your Hands is just one of hundreds of events which will take place across the country during UKTI’s Export Week which is running 11 to 15 November.
Other events in the East Midlands include Explore Export, In to Africa, and events designed to help firms address specific issues such as taxation and logistics.
Sarah Stevenson, the East Midlands Acting Regional Director for UKTI, said: “The past year has been full of challenges for the region’s companies but the East Midlands is enjoying another excellent export performance as one of only four regions to record growth, with £10.2 billion worth of goods and services exported around the world between January and June 2013.
“We were delighted with the support for our previous Export Week initiatives and we’re looking forward to welcoming as many of the region’s businesses as possible at our events this time so they can find out what opportunities are available in overseas markets.”
