More facilities are now open across Northampton Borough Council parks

Northampton Borough Council reopens a number of sporting facilities across its parks and the aviary in Abington park, in line with government’s advice.

Tennis courts in Abington park, Becket’s park and the Racecourse are now are available for users to book at tennisnorthants.com .Basketball courts at the Racecourse along with other multi-use games areas across council parks and open spaces have reopened for the public.

Residents are encouraged to adhere to the social distancing advice and only play with members of their household or one person outside their household.

The aviary in Abington park will be open daily between 8am and 4pm. A one-way system will be in operation to assist visitors to follow social distancing guidance.

Councillor Mike Hallam, Cabinet member for environment, said: “We continue to follow national guidelines on the use of parks and open spaces and as a result, we have reopened some facilities including car parks, basketball and tennis courts. But one thing has not changed and that is the need for social distancing.

“Keeping at least two metres apart from people not in your household remains essential in ensuring that we all play our part in stopping the spread of the virus.”

In line with existing government restrictions team sports, outdoor exercise classes and running clubs are not permitted in council parks and open spaces.

Toilets will remain closed until additional hygiene and social distancing arrangements have been put in place and visitors are advised to plan accordingly.

Visitor centres, children’s playgrounds, bowling greens and outdoor gym equipment will remain closed for the time being.
