A Northamptonshire business networking group has given a £1,000 boost to a childhood cancer charity.
The money was raised in aid of Alfes Cause throughout the year by attendees of Lunch and Learn, a concept launched in January by Northampton-based marketing agency Onefoursix which sees professionals from the local area meet once a month to have lunch and learn about marketing methods that will get their businesses noticed.
Dave Williams, Managing Director of Onefoursix, said: “Throughout 2016 we have been holding Lunch and Learn events, putting aside every penny paid – not just profits - by those that attend with the intention of donating it to Alfes Cause.”
Alfes Cause was set up after its namesake Alfe Game fought and won a battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Alfe was just five years old when he was diagnosed and spent eight months receiving chemotherapy treatment. During this time, he ended up in intensive care and almost died twice. After going into remission in 2010, Alfe decided he wanted to do something to help other sick children. This saw the beginnings of Alfes Cause as it stands today.
Karen Rogers, Alfe’s mother and Trustee of Alfes Cause, said: “Alfes Cause started out as a small gesture that Alfe wanted to make. He designed and sold Christmas cards to raise money to buy gifts for children spending Christmas in Northampton General Hospital and for two of his friends who had relapsed with leukaemia. He sold nearly 300 packs and raised around £400.
“In the years that have followed we have grown into a registered charity that helps 30 families in Northampton who have been affected by childhood cancer. We do this through monthly meetings and providing support to siblings, time away for families and much more. We also work hard to raise awareness of the symptoms that can easily be dismissed as something else. The money raised by the Lunch and Learn sessions will go towards a Legoland trip we are planning for the families in 2017 and will really make such a difference.”
Dave added: “It gave us great pleasure to present this cheque to Karen and I would like to thank everyone who has supported Lunch and Learn over the last 12 months. They have been a great success and we will continue to run them in the New Year.”
