It’s the year that keeps on giving for the lowdown, a local voluntary charity based in Kingswell Street, Northampton, who support young people on their journey towards positive emotional health and wellbeing.
This year they have celebrated their 30th Birthday, been recipients of The Queens Award for Voluntary Services and been chosen as the Mayors Charity. The organisation are now celebrating again from receiving £58,700 of funding from The Wilson Foundation.
THE WILSON FOUNDATION is a UK registered charity established to give ‘a helping hand’ to young people in Northamptonshire. The charity was formed in 1970 in memory of the late Connolly Thomas Wilson OBE, a Northamptonshire man who created a highly successful building company.
The lowdown services include free and confidential counselling, emotional wellbeing, sexual health and LGBTQ support services for 11-25 year olds in Northampton and the surrounding areas. All services are delivered in a caring, friendly and non-judgemental environment.
Currently the lowdown receives funding from the NHS/Public Health to support 11-18 year olds with one to one counselling. The Wilson Foundation’s generous donation will fill the shortfall of service cost which will support approximately 150 young people, this is equivalent to approximately 3 months of referrals. The 18-25 service is currently not funded therefore funds are found by Grants, Funding applications, donations and fundraising activities.
The donation will also partially fund the lowdown’s CPCAB (Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body) accredited Level 2 Counselling Training. The lowdown currently has 16 people undertaking the training who will go on to providing counselling support for young people with issues such as anxiety, depression, self-esteem, bullying and more. In 2018/19 the lowdown had 83 volunteers providing vital support to the young people of Northampton.
‘QUOTE FROM THE LOWDOWN’
“We are delighted to receive this support from the Wilson Foundation. This will help the lowdown in our mission to increase capacity and reduce waiting times for young people accessing our much-needed counselling service. Last year alone we supported over 600 young people and demand continues to grow.” Sharon Womersley, CEO.
‘QUOTE FROM THE WILSON FOUNDATION’
“The Wilson Foundation is delighted to be supporting The Lowdown. It is hoped that our grant will help many more young people to access one to one counselling during this coming year and it will also fund the additional Counselling Training at the centre. The Lowdown is providing such a vital service to our local youth community and we hope that our funding will help to make a difference going forwards” Polly Wilson, Trustee.
