An asbestos consultancy in Northamptonshire is backing a campaign to raise awareness of mesothelioma.
Every year around 2,500 people in the UK are diagnosed with the incurable cancer which is caused by exposure to asbestos.
Asbestos was used heavily in the building trade here until 1999 and remains in many private and public buildings.
Life expectancy for those diagnosed with stage 1 mesothelioma is around 20 months whilst those diagnosed later may only survive for 15 months or less.
However, campaign group Action Meso is fighting to raise awareness and eradicate asbestos and asbestos-related diseases. It is working on plans for Action Mesothelioma Days, starting with a virtual event in 2021, and want supporters to use the campaign’s selfie boards to create social media posts using #ActionMeso.
Flying the flag for the campaign in Northamptonshire is Acorn Analytical Services, which educates people about the dangers of asbestos through podcasts, blogs and its free book, ‘Asbestos The Dark Arts’.
Company director Ian Stone said: “We’ve had fun creating pictures to promote #ActionMeso but there’s a serious message behind what we’re doing.
“There are thousands of deaths every year from mesothelioma and whilst this disease is tragically incurable it’s also preventable.
“This campaign sees patient support groups, charities, professional bodies, patients, carers, healthcare experts and industry professionals coming together for the first time with one voice to demand the eradication of this terrible disease.”
Action Meso campaigner and mesothelioma patient Mavis Nye added: “We want everyone to understand the dangers of asbestos and how it still exists in homes and buildings around them.
“For this to make the world safer, we need more people and organisations to get behind the campaign. The starting point is to sign up at www.actionmeso.org right now.
“Then we’ll let you know about the activities we’ve planned throughout 2021 and beyond to make sure other families don’t have to go through what we’ve been through.”
To help businesses to deal effectively with managing asbestos, Acorn has created a service called the Acorn Asbestos Antidote which takes firms from non-compliance through to full compliance with the law and ensures any asbestos no longer poses a danger.
