Demolition of Greyfriars moves a step closer

Posted: 05/11/13 by West Northamptonshire Council

Arrangements for the demolition of the Greyfriars building are to be discussed by Northampton Borough Council’s Cabinet next week.

The demolition will begin on March 31, 2014 after the opening of the new North Gate Bus station. Detailed plans are now being being put together for bringing the building down, which will take around 18 months, and preparing the site for future development.

Funding will be allocated from the Borough Council’s capital programme so that the work can begin in the current financial year. The demolition project will be complex and lengthy, since Greyfriars is a six-storey building that includes office accommodation and a car park as well as the bus station. It will take up to18 months to complete the demolition and cost £4 million.

To repair and improve the Greyfriars building sufficiently to bring it back into use would cost around £30 million. The building has cost up to £500,000 a year to run.

Once Greyfriars is demolished, this prime site in the centre of the town can be brought forward rapidly for redevelopment and Northampton Borough Council will work with Legal & General, who own the Grosvenor Centre, or other partners as appropriate, to facilitate that regeneration.

Councillor David Mackintosh, Leader of Northampton Borough Council, said: “Greyfriars is beyond repair. It has always been expensive to run and its demolition not only makes sense financially, it will also open up the site for further retail or associated development, breathing new life into this under-used area of the town and becoming one of the cornerstones for a bigger and better town centre.

“In Northampton we are moving forward with a number of large regeneration projects that are coming together to change the face of the town and build our future prosperity. The opening of North Gate will give us a modern facility that will be an appropriate and welcoming gateway for visitors and the demolition of Greyfriars will be yet another positive step forward.”

The issue will be discussed at the Borough Council’s Cabinet meeting on Wednesday 13 November.

The new Bus Interchange is being funded and supported by Northampton Borough Council, West Northamptonshire Development Corporation and Northamptonshire County Council.
