Barker Shoes, a shoe manufacturer based in Northampton, is celebrating after winning the Digital Communications Campaign of the Year award at the British Chambers of Commerce’s annual Chamber Business Awards 2018. The Chamber Business Awards, now in its 15th year, is one of the showpiece events in the business calendar, highlighting the role of business in delivering growth and prosperity for the UK and local communities.
The company, members of Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce (incorporating Milton Keynes Chamber of Commerce) has been trading for over 135 years and each year they produce over 200,000 pairs of shoes. Building on their success to date they wanted to broaden their customer base, including reaching a younger audience, so decided to use digital platforms to achieve this. With a transformation of their website and a surge in their social media use, the company’s online presence was enhanced, resulting in increased business-to-consumer sales and profits.
The judges were impressed with the campaign and said it was an excellent example of traditional values and modern technology working hand-in-hand.
Francis Martin, president of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) said: “Barker Shoes is a terrific example of great British values meeting modern technology to drive growth. This long-running company has demonstrated tremendous success in reaching out to new and young audiences through the use of digital communications. This award is a testament to their innovation and willingness to adapt to changing times.”
