On Sunday May 7th the French will go to the polls once more to choose their next president. The candidates of both mainstream parties have now been eliminated, leaving an unprecedented contest between two outsiders.
The implications of the choice between pro-European centrist Emmanuel Macron and the Eurosceptic far-right leader, Marine Le Pen, make this arguably the most important vote of 2017. Even after this decision is made, the uncertainty over how France will be governed will continue, with the legislative elections in June likely to be unusually unpredictable—and key to the policymaking outlook.
On Thursday May 11th, The Economist Intelligence Unit will host a webinar to present their analysis of the result and what it will mean for France and for Europe. Questions to be addressed will include:
• Will the business environment improve?
• How will France’s decision affect the Brexit negotiations and the outlook for the EU?
• How much of the government’s agenda is likely to be implemented?
• Will the election result affect the economic outlook?
Join the webinar on Thursday May 11th at 2:00pm - 2:45pm British Summer Time (9:00am - 9:45am Eastern Daylight Time) to hear the latest analysis and outlook from The Economist’s French analyst, Emily Mansfield, and to ask questions.
