Northamptonshire Chamber played host to the Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Dr Vince Cable, as part of his visit to Northampton on Friday.
Well known for his sound appreciation of the current issues facing the UK economy and his significant concerns about bank lending to business, Dr Cable took part in a Q & A session with members of the Chamber’s Business Alliance Group.
Questions from the 25-strong audience of Alliance members covered a range of topics from public sector pensions and taxation to terms of bank lending and what to do about the public debt levels. Dr Cable, who once worked as Chief Economist for Shell amongst other private and public sector roles, impressed the room with his eloquent and knowledgeable answers.
Gerald Couldrake, Partner at Howes Percival in Northampton, attended the event. “It was fantastic of the Chamber to give us the opportunity to meet such a well regarded and influential politician,” he said.
“I highlighted the need for Government to create an environment in which businesses can prosper. It was excellent to hear in response that Dr Cable believes that successful businesses making profits - and thus being able to pay tax - was the best way for the UK to escape from the current economic problems.”
Paul Griffiths Chief Executive of Northamptonshire Chamber, added: “We were delighted to welcome Dr Vince Cable to the Chamber and give him a chance to interact with our members about the issues facing individual businesses from a range of different sectors and the UK economy in general. The event went extremely well.”
Dr Cable said he “highly valued another opportunity to hear feedback from real businesses outside of the Westminster bubble”.
