Saints alive! Mascot Bernie to become panto star…

Popular Saints mascot 'Bernie' will be making his first appearance in panto this Christmas!

The fans' favourite at Franklins Gardens is now hoping he will become as popular with the audiences at Northampton's Deco Theatre as he prepares to star alongside pop star Chesney Hawkes and former Hollyoaks favourite Melissa Walton in Aladdin.

"It's fantastic news that The Saints have allowed Bernie leave of absence to join our cast this Christmas," said Jill Roach, of panto producers Stage Right Productions. "We have always said that we want our panto to be very much a local affair, and having someone as popular as Bernie involved is all a part of that - I'm sure he'll be a real winner with the audiences."

A special role for Bernie is being written into the panto, and both Chesney and Melissa are looking forward to working with the Saints Mascot.

"Chesney and Melissa are both sports fans, and know all about Bernie," said Jill Roach. "They think it's a great idea - Bernie's a very lovable character, and not only that, he's a Saints legend and one of the most recognisable individuals in Northamptonshire!"

And there will be no worries about Bernie missing any Saints home games - the producers have promised that he will be free to go on and support his favourite rugby team as ever.

"It just means Bernie's going to be very busy, what with rehearsals, and then the show itself. But he's a great character, and the audiences will love him - we'll have some great fun." said Jill Roach.

Meanwhile, Bernie’s opportunity to ‘tread the boards’ has been greeted enthusiastically by all of his friends and colleagues at The Saints.

“Bernie was delighted to be offered the chance of being in a panto. He loves Christmas and can never get enough of it!” said club spokesman Chris Wearmouth. “He really is a 'one and only' mascot, and is really looking forward to being on stage. Let’s hope he behaves himself!”
