Review of farm regulations - have your say

Business Link is asking local farmers, growers and food processors to give DEFRA their views on effective ways to reduce regulatory burden.

The Task Force on Farming Regulation is currently reviewing regulation affecting farmers, growers and food processors. Are there regulations that go beyond what is actually required? Or are they too complex or have unnecessary red tape – whether form filling, record keeping or inspections?

Stephen Smith, chief executive of EMB Ltd, the organisation responsible for delivering local access to the Business Link service across the East Midlands, comments: “This a chance for our farmers and growers to tell the Task Force how current regulations affect their business and how they should be changed, or how the rules can be made to fit better with the actual way that they run their business. Taking action on red tape is crucially important; we want to see the time spent on red tape being spent more effectively on producing food and managing the countryside”.

There are several areas on which you can have your say.

You can comment on:

  • farm animal issues - dairy, beef, sheep, pigs, poultry and farmed fish

  • growing and crops issues - arable and horticulture

  • food processing issues - meat, milk, eggs, fruit and vegetables etc

  • business and management issues - planning, labour, health and safety, tax, farm retail etc

  • environment and land management issues - air, soil, water, waste, access etc

To find out more about farming regulations, or to tell the Task Force about any regulations you think are unnecessary or could be removed without lowering standards for business, the public or the environment, call Business Link on 0845 058 6644 or visit www.businesslink.gov.uk/eastmidlands/farming

All comments and suggestions received by 31 October 2010 will be considered and fed into the review. The results will be made available early in 2011.
