New scheme to help householders save money on fuel bills

Northampton Borough Council has joined forces with energy company EON to improve the energy efficiency of over 2,500 council homes in some of the more deprived areas of town and help private householders save energy and money.

Householders qualifying for the scheme could save up to £300 a year on their fuel bills through a series of energy saving measures that could include external wall insulation, loft insulation, new boilers and solar panels.

Homes need to be in the qualifying areas located within Castle, Spencer, St James, Lumbertubs, Billing or Eastfield and require some or all of the available energy saving measures.

Council tenants who qualify are being informed by letter this week and are invited to a special event to find out more about the measures on offer. Private households in the qualifying areas also have the opportunity to apply for grants to install energy saving measures at discounted prices.

Councillor Mary Markham, Northampton Borough Council cabinet member for housing, said: "This is yet another great opportunity for us to help residents save energy and money. As a council we are committed to doing all we can to cut the amount of energy we use and also to help others to do the same.”

The scheme is part of the national Community Energy Savings Programme (CESP) and targets low income families, many of which will be living in fuel poverty.

Jon Kirby, CESP Manager at E.ON, said: "We’re committed to getting homes energy fit and this is a great example of councils, communities and companies getting together to help people lower their bills and reduce our effect on the planet. By tackling whole communities in such a way we can really start to make a difference and build energy efficiency into our everyday lives.”
