NBC staff paint railings in Abington Park
Staff and Councillors from Northampton Borough Council gave up their free time to lend a helping hand in improving one of the towns much loved parks.
The Friends of Abington Park also helped out on ‘Paintbrush Saturday’ in a bid to revamp the ornamental railings around the lower lake and former pitch and putt area of the park. After the success of many community projects over the years, Cabinet member for Performance and Support, Councillor Brian Markham, wanted to do his bit to show his support to the ‘I Love My Park’ initiative. Councillor Markham said: “I drive past the railings in Abington Park Crescent almost every day, my wife (Councillor Irene Markham, Abington Ward) and I thought that painting the railings was something that we could help improve. But the railings go on forever, so when we heard that The Friends of Abington Park group were also interested in the project we decided to combine our efforts. We are so pleased with the result and some of the volunteers even mentioned doing it again! It’s great to see so many people wanting to contribute to the ‘I Love My Park’ initiative.”
During the summer when Abington Park was at its most busy, Northampton Borough Council staff carried out extra hours of litter picking to ensure that the parks were clean and tidy for the thousands of visitors who flocked to them each week.
Northampton Borough Council portfolio holder for the environment, Councillor Trini Crake, said: “We’re so proud of our parks and we are doing our best to make sure they are lovely places to visit all year round. It was great to see that people will give up their leisure time to help improve their local park. We really need people who enjoy their parks to do their bit to keep them clean and tidy.”
The Friends of Abington Park and NBC Environment Services were on hand to help and provide equipment; a litter pick was also coordinated after the event, the Park Café provided free refreshments for all volunteers.
