Dachser invests in Bratislava Eurohub

The internationally operating logistics provider, Dachser, is investing in the construction of new premises for its branch and Eurohub in Bratislava. Dachser managing director Michael Schilling and the deputy mayor Dr Vladimír Becár performed a ground-breaking ceremony yesterday in the Slovak municipality of Lozorno.

In light of a steady rise in demand for intelligent logistics solutions and the increasing significance of the Bratislava Eurohub in the Dachser network, the logistics provider has decided to construct a larger facility in the Slovak Republic. The official ground-breaking ceremony took place on 17 August; completion is scheduled for Q1 2011. It represents an investment of around 11 million euros.

The new logistics facility is being built on a 64,000-square-metre site. Dachser is constructing a 3,400-square-metre trans-shipment hall for industrial goods, which will be used by the branch as well as acting as a Eurohub. In addition, an 1,800-square-metre office building will be constructed. A warehouse with 13,500 pallet spaces will be added in a second building phase.

Bratislava plays a vital role in Dachser’s network. “As one of three Eurohubs, Bratislava plays a decisive role in distributing goods within Europe,” says Michael Schilling, Dachser managing director for European Network Management & Logistics Systems. “We are therefore extending our facility here to meet the challenges of the future.”

The logistics provider has operated an eastern European logistics hub in the Slovak capital since 2007 and at the beginning of this year it was extended to become a Eurohub. Since the beginning of April 2010, the Eurohub has linked a total of 12 countries between the Baltic, the Adriatic and the Black Sea. Bratislava is a crossroads for all central and eastern European freight services in the Dachser network. It has a direct link to the Eurohub in Überherrn and from 2011 will also be linked to the new French Eurohub in Clermont-Ferrand.

A total of 12 countries currently have direct links to the Bratislava Eurohub: Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Italy and the Slovak Republic. The Eurohub operates daily precision-timed scheduled services for imports and exports to and from the above countries as well as Germany. A team from Dachser’s Air & Sea Logistics business segment is responsible for intercontinental goods flows. Dachser has been operating in the Slovak market since 2004 and now has around 110 employees in the country.
