College shortlisted for prestigious AoC Beacon Award

Northampton College has been shortlisted for a national award for excellence in the promotion of equality and diversity.

The Association of Colleges (AOC) Beacon Awards are conferred annually on colleges which have demonstrated excellence in aspects of their service to learners and the wider community. The Equality and Diversity Beacon Award is presented to the college which has provided the highest standards in promoting and delivering a non-discriminatory, inclusive environment for staff and students.

Northampton College has been promoting equality, diversity and inclusion across the institution for many years through various initiatives and events. It was awarded the prestigious Investors in Diversity standard in March 2010. In its nomination for the Beacon Award, Northampton College submitted an in-depth report highlighting its approach, the benefits to staff and students and its plans for the future. A panel of judges are set to visit the College early in October to meet with staff and students and gather further evidence to support the application.

Principal Len Closs said: "We have been informed that there were a record number of nominations for this award this year so we are understandably delighted to have been shortlisted. This is an achievement in itself that reflects the value that the College places on equality and diversity and emphasises the hard work which has gone into embedding equality, diversity and inclusion college-wide. We now have put in place a sound strategy and set of procedures for continuous improvement and the momentum and enthusiasm which has built up has already led to more ideas for the future. Getting to this stage has inspired us to continue our journey."

The winner of the Association of Colleges (AOC) Equality and Diversity Beacon Award will be announced at the AoC’s Annual Conference & Exhibition in November.
