A mouthwatering celebration of food on the market

Food lovers will be in for a treat this weekend as speciality foods return to the Market Square bringing the best locally produced foods, the flavours of the continent and the chance to win £150 in vouchers.

A continental market will arrive on Friday 17 September, selling some of the best Italian and French foods and drinks. On Saturday 18 September, the continental market will be joined by local food producers as the new season of monthly farmers' markets begins. Shoppers will not only be able to enjoy sampling some of the best foods from our region and the continent, but also have the chance to win £150 in food. Anyone who buys something from the speciality food market will be eligible to be entered into the prize draw.

The continental market will bring a wide range of foods and wines from across southern Europe. Stalls include bakeries selling many types of breads as well as biscuits, fruit tarts and Italian sweets. Mixed olives, wine, cheese, olive oil and balsamic vinegar will also be amongst the quality Italian produce on sale.

On Saturday for the first time the continental market will be joined by local food producers. The farmers' market will include local farmers, growers, bakers, brewers and processors who use locally grown and reared ingredients. Stalls will be selling rare breed sausages, free range chicken and Dexter beef, cakes, plants, chutney, marmalade, jam, vegan chocolate, bread and biscuits, goats cheese, curry sauces, fruit tarts and pastries.

Shoppers will also find there are no shortage of cooking ideas on Saturday thanks to the chefs of Les Olives. From midday to 2pm there will be cooking demonstrations from the chefs who will be showing how easy it can be to make something delicious from the ingredients available on the Market Square.

Councillor Paul Varnsverry, Northampton Borough Council's cabinet member for events said: "I am happy to see the continental and farmers' markets coming together. Our region is home to some of the best food producers and our Market Square is the perfect place for them to sell their goods. Northamptonshire is hitting the mark with people who are passionate about food, and we want to be part of the drive to buy local, and profile companies on our own doorstep."
