WNDC to continue delivering in Northampton, Daventry and Towcester
The Government has announced that West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC) will continue the delivery of jobs, homes and investment across the west of Northamptonshire.
This follows a Government review of three Urban Development Corporations, which were established five years ago to deliver growth and regeneration in London, Thurrock, and West Northamptonshire.
Recognising the progress that has already been made in the area, the Government has announced a future for WNDC as a ‘strategic’ and ‘delivery focused’ organisation. It will continue to deliver major infrastructure projects and regeneration of the town centres of Northampton, Daventry and Towcester.
Alongside this, WNDC will determine planning applications for large-scale development in its area of operation. The Corporation will focus on major schemes, with planning powers returning to the local authorities on a phased basis. From April 2011, the threshold for residential planning applications determined by WNDC will be raised from 50 to 200 units.
WNDC Chief Executive Peter Mawson said:“This decision is excellent news. It reflects the progress that has been made so far in the delivery of jobs, homes and investment across the area.
"During the past five years, we have invested over £60 million in local communities, ranging from award winning new roads and flood defences to town centre attractions like the Fishmarket. But this activity is just the start of a long term plan. Working with Northampton Borough Council, we will continue delivering the transformation of the town. Our priorities include a redevelopment of the waterside area, as well as the regeneration of Castle Station, providing a modern new face to Northampton.”
Regeneration Minister, Ian Austin, responsible for regeneration in West Northamptonshire, added: “The regeneration and sustainable growth of Northampton, Daventry and Towcester remains an important priority and will benefit from a stronger, more focussed UDC working closely with local authorities and communities. These new arrangements keep the focus on delivering new homes and jobs for local people but help improve working arrangements with delivery partners to make efficiencies and savings and give more responsibility to local communities.”
