Public meeting to discuss night-time closure of Bridge Street, Northampton

A public meeting is taking place at the Guildhall at 6.30pm on Wednesday 27 January to give people the chance to discuss the nighttime closure of Bridge Street.

Bridge Street has been closed to traffic between 8pm and 4am on Fridays and Saturdays since November 28 and the closure programme is continuing for the foreseeable future while its effectiveness is being assessed.

The initiative has been taken by the Safer Stronger Northampton Partnership to increase public safety in the town-centre street, which is packed with people visiting pubs and clubs at the weekend, and cut the risk of crime and disorder.

The closures have been monitored and feedback from police on duty in the leisure zone has been that the area is much safer when traffic free.

The public meeting will allow people to air their views on the closure and the Safer Stronger Northampton Partnership will take anything people have to say into consideration.

Anyone who wishes to formally object to the Experimental Closure Order must do so in writing to Northamptonshire County Council before May 27.

Speaking on behalf of the Safer Stronger Northampton Partnership, Councillor Paul Varnsverry said: “These closures really seem to be working well in making Bridge Street safer for pedestrians on a Friday and Saturday night. However, we are paying attention to the views of local businesses and anyone else who may have concerns about the road being closed and I am looking forward to hearing what people have to say.”

The Safer Stronger Northampton Partnership is made up of Northampton Borough Council, Northamptonshire Police, Northamptonshire County Council, Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue and other partners.
