Duston School launches dual Specialist Status as Business and Enterprise and Science College
October 9th, 2009
Item submitted by: The Duston SchoolThe end of September saw The Duston School launch its dual Specialist Status as a Business and Enterprise, and Science College.
During the event, students from ages 11-18 showed enthusiasm, motivation and above all, great entrepreneurial and scientific thinking as they spent the day creating their own new brand of soap. The task, inspired by Sir Alan Sugar’s last series of The Apprentice, proved a hit with students and ensured that the official launch of the school’s Specialist Status went with a bang.
Students were thrilled to be given the opportunity to not only plan and design their brand of soap but also to make and package their product. The morning culminated in each group pitching their product, before the winning teams from each year group presented their finished products to invited guests from local and national businesses.
These businesses included Rowena Bird, Co-Founder of Lush Cosmetics and ex-pupil at The Duston School, Marc Pettican, Barclaycard Head of Sales, Global Payment Acceptance and Brian Binley, MP for Northampton South. All those who attended found it almost impossible to judge given the high quality of all products and there was only one point separating the winning teams!
Headteacher, Jane Herriman said: “We are particularly pleased to have been awarded a double specialism in Business and Enterprise and Science. This will allow the school to equip our young learners with the skills required for the changing work force they will experience in the future. Today is a one off event that allows the whole school and local community to celebrate our recent successes.”
The Duston School is moving rapidly towards its goal of being an outstanding school, and its ambitious launch event is just the first in a whole series of exciting and innovative projects which will ensure that when their students leave school, the only words they will be hearing are, “You’re hired!”
